News Warning after

£80 tree scam RESIDENTS are being warned to beware of rogue traders “doing the rounds” again in Bearsted. Community warden Sally

Williams was alerted to a case in Ware Street, where three men in a van turned up at a house claiming a neighbour had complained about overhanging branches. They offered to cut them down for a fee of £40. The elderly lady agreed and they cut off three branches in a matter of minutes. She thenwent to get some money

from her bedroom and the men fol- lowed her into the house, demand- ing £140. She eventually parted with £80, feeling very intimidated, and they left. Realising something was amiss,

she asked her neighbours if they had complained about overhanging branches, which they had not. They said they would have been

happy to cut down any overhang- ing branches to help her out. The lady contacted the commu-

nitywarden who alerted the police. The incident happened onApril 20 – around the same time therewere re- ports of several thefts from vehicles in the area. Residents are advised to be on

their guard and not to deal with any uninvited tradesmen.

Jack White is honoured with France’s top medal

JACK White has been awarded the highest French honour for his services in thewar. The Legion of Honour (Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur) was posthumously received by his daughter Patricia de Mowbray, for his part in liberating France at the end of WorldWar II. He landed on Sword Beach on June 28 1944 as a member of the Royal Corps of Sig- nals under fierce German shelling. Later, he faced action at close quarters in Caen and helped take the city with many German prison- ers captured. Via the parish magazine, Patricia

told friends of the award in Leeds village, where he and his wife,Au- drey, made their home in 1983. Jack waswell-known for his community activities, which included his work with the Royal British Legion as branch president, treasurer, chair- man and secretary at different times. The award follows a decision by

Jack White as a young soldier and, left, more recently

the French government in 2014 to bestow its highest honour on every surviving British veteran who helped to liberate France, ratified

by President Francois Hollande to mark the 70th anniversary of the Normandy Landings in 1944. Patricia said: “Father was aware

he might be eligible for the award which the French Government sent with a letter from President Hol- lande...unfortunately after his death on October 1 2015. His younger brother, Arthur, and all his nieces and nephews from his older brother and older sister...are all very proud of him - as amI, his daughter, who will be very hon- oured to wear this and his other medals at the Armistice Services held every year.” The Legion of Honour has been

won by the Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal, who pursued war criminals on behalf of the Jews, and Paul Hewson – also known as U2 singer Bono – for his human rights activism and philanthropy. The ho- nour is divided into five degrees: Chevalier (Knight), Officier (Offi- cer), Commandeur (Commander), Grand Officier (Grand Officer) and Grand Croix (Grand Cross).
