Festival fun to mark the Queen’s 90th birthday

THERE will be some right royal goings-on in Maidstone town cen- tre on July 2, when this year’s Maidstone Summer Festival marks Her Majesty’s 90th birth- day.

Organisers of the festival, which follows on from last year’s hugely successful parade, have asked all entrants to come in character as kings and queens. Three samba bands, three dance schools, singers, schools and baton twirlers are among the artistes who have already promised to partici- pate.

And, just the same as last year,

the Downs Mail is also proud to be the community event’s official media partner. The festival will take place at

venues around the town centre, in- cluding Jubilee Square and Brench- ley Gardens, with all-day entertainment offering fun for all the family. Maidstone Baton Twirlers will be

joined by Bloco Fogo, Old School Samba and the Maidstone Gram- mar School Samba Band Baterias

The Topaz Community – a vol- unteering organisation which sup- ports people with their health and well-being – plans to play an active role in the afternoon’s activity and the Irish folk dancing group from Frydays Academy is shining up its shoes ready to get jigging. Meanwhile, teenagers from the Vocademy singing school are tun- ing up and Mandy Ellen Perform-

ing Arts is putting together a rou- tine to ensure shoppers and trip- pers have a ‘regal’ time. If anyone else would like to be in-
