Girl Guides celebrate 80 years of friendships
A REUNION to celebrate the 80th birthday of Lenham Guides pro- vided the perfect opportunity for a trip down memory lane. More than 50 past and present
Girl Guides, aged 10 to 80, attended the event at Lenham Community Centre, recalling cherished memo- ries of tying knots, time around the camp fire and the friends they made. Julia Thomsett, who has run Lenham Guides with Mary Terry for the last 25 years, said: “It was lovely to catch up with previous Guides and have the opportunity to remind people why they loved being part of Girlguiding.”
As part of the evening, those at- tending were welcomed in sema- phore by Lenham Guides, and two new recruits – Charlotte Legg and Sophie Collett – made their prom- ise.
Therewere activities to have a go
at, including making apple crum- ble, quizzes and the more tradi- tional tying of knots. Displays of photos were around the room, showing how the unit had changed over the years, with many remi- niscing about their time with the group. The evening was finished off with an indoor camp fire and new and traditional songs. Julia added: “We are now look-
Mickey’s
ing for more volunteers to help us and join the adventureswe have as adults; it’s incredibly rewarding. I get so much out of seeing girls de- velop their confidence in a safe, girl-only space. I’ve made brilliant friends and learned so many new skills – I would recommend Guid- ing to everyone!” Another member, who was a
Guide in the 1980s, recalled: “It wasn’t until the reunion that I re- alised how much I missed being a Guide. We used to go camping at the coast and had campfires in the sand dunes.” To find out more visit
