Three jailed for Spar shop raid

THREE men have been jailed for their role in a burglary at a Bearsted retailer. Jason Bowers, Arthur Jones and

Jack Lee broke into the post office in Ashford Road on June 5, 2015, stealing cigarettes valued at more than £3,000. All three pleaded guilty to bur-

glary andwere sentenced at Maid- stone Crown Court. Policewere called to the scene at 12.15am after reports that three men, all wearing balaclavas, had smashed the glass in the front door and made off with a bag of goods. Police spotted a suspicious blue

Vauxhall Astra in Yeoman Lane and asked the driver to pull over. However, as an officer ap- proached the car, it drove away. Following a short chase, it crashed. A police helicopter and a crew

from Kent Police’s dog unit were summoned and Lee and Jones were arrested following the search. Bowers, of Pear TreeWalk in Sit-

tingbourne, was arrested in Janu- ary this year after forensic evi- dence linked him to the scene. As well as the burglary charge, the 44- year-old admitted a dangerous driving offence in Gillingham and committing another burglary in Rochester. He was sentenced to 34 months for the burglaries and a further 12 months, to be served consecutively, for dangerous driv- ing.

Jones (50), of MeadsAvenue, Sit- tingbourne, received a 27-month sentence and Lee (46), of Quinton Road, Sittingbourne, was sen- tenced to two years. Detective Constable Lynda Birch

said: “These three men caused a considerable amount of stress for the victim of this burglary and I am pleased they have been brought to justice. “They caused a lot of damage to

the store and put road users and officers at risk when they failed to stop.”
