Pals’ epic cycle in Tom’s name
A GANG of brickies, a plasterer, mechanic and a printer will be turning their talents to a new ven- ture by getting on their bikes for charity. The friends from Grove Green in Maidstone will ride fromWinches- ter to Eastbourne to raise money for two cancer charities in memory of their friend Tom Clarke, who last year lost his life to cancer, aged 29. The 100-mile off-road stunt will
be the second charity ride for three of them, including organiser Lee Goddard, who led a team along the same route over twodays last year, to raise more than £3,000 following the death of his brother Marc to cancer. Tom Clarke, from Ware Street in Bearsted, was his cousin. Lee said: “Tomwas an incredible individual who touched the hearts of everyone who knew or met him with his incredible energy, com- passion, and drive for life.” In spite of being diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, just four years after leaving Oakwood Park Grammar School, Lee describes his cousin as “strong, brave and inspirational – never feeling sorry for himself”. This second ride on Saturday,
June 4, will be for the Bone Cancer Research Trust and CLIC Sargent,
Lier bin plan
LOCAL businesses are to be asked if they wish to sponsor a series of stylish litter bins in Bearsted. The parish council has obtained a
quote from Maidstone Council to replace the black and gold bins in the conservation area, which cost £250 each, including delivery and regular emptying. The council wants to replace the
seven bins on the Green, one near the shops and another on Hog Hill. It also wants a new bin in Madgin- ford, close to the parade of shops. One shop has already offered to contribute towards the cost and the parish council hopes that other businesses will participate.

which were suggested by Tom. However, this time, Lee, Danny Ba- stone, Darren Heathfield, Simon Rhodes, Shane Collier, Paul Car- penter and Lewis Young have given themselves just a day to com- plete the ride. Lee said: “Tom fought long and
hard but kept smiling and laughing to the end, always putting on a brave face to his friends and family. With this in mind, in spite of last year’s ride being incredibly gru- elling, we have decided to com- plete the challenge in half the time.” They will be supported on the
day by friends James Day and Mick Jones, who will cook their meals. To support the ride visit
