News Scam emails

COUNCIL chiefs are warning resi- dents to be on the look-out for un- solicited emails urging them to set up direct debits to pay their council tax online – it maywell be a scam. The warning comes after Ton-

bridge and Malling received a re- port from a resident of a bogus email urging the recipient to click on a link. A council spokesman said: “This

is the latest in a range of scams aimed at tricking people to part with their bank details and their cash.”

Maths lessons help pupils’ garden bloom

PUPILS at The Holmesdale School in Snodland used maths skills to bring a neglected piece of land back to life. While creating the garden teach-

ers tasked the year 8 pupils to use their measurement and angle knowledge to design the layout of the plants and flowers. Science teacher Mr Badham said:

“The pupils have also been apply- ing the knowledge gained in their science lessons to the garden, by looking at photosynthesis, sustain- able development and how differ- ent nutrients affect plants.” The pupils enjoyed the al fresco

lesson after water company South EastWater stumped up the cash to pay for the project. The water company, which has

its head office in the town, granted the school £1,000 as part of its Com- munity Chest fund to buy equip- ment, plants and seeds to create an attractive area next to Snodland train station. Jo Shippey, the company’s senior campaign and media officer, went to see the garden and said: “It’s great to see the donation making a

difference to pupils’ learning while also improving a space the whole community can enjoy.” Patrick Hannaway, the school’s executive principal, said: “Getting pupils to apply the skills they’ve learned to everyday life is ex- tremely important. “We’ve also been able to buy a polytunnel with part of the dona- tion and pupils will be using it to grow plants and vegetables to buy and sell in the school – further help- ing develop their maths skills.”
