Giving hope to forces’ heroes

ROYAL British Legion Industries, based inAylesford, has marked its first ever naval affiliation with a visit by the Commander of HMS Kent, Daniel Thomas, and some of his crew. RBLI’s Chief Executive, Steve

Sherry CMG OBE, welcomed the visitors with a presentation about the charity’s history - from its very beginnings caring for WW1 veter- ans diagnosed with tuberculosis, to the many services RBLI provides those leaving the forces today, in- cluding housing, social care, train- ing and employment. The Commander and his crew

were then treated to a tour of RBLI’s social enterprises which offer a range of products and serv- ices to private and public sector or- ganisations across the UK. The visitors were even presented with their very own manufactured road sign to take back to the frigate. They were shown around the

Royal British Legion Village in which over 300 ex-service person- nel and their families live and vis-

ited RBLI’s new Base Camp café, built by a grant from the People’s Millions LotteryAward in 2015. The tour culminated in a visit to

RBLI’s Garden of Honour where time was given over to reflection before a wreath was laid at the na- tional memorial. Since 1919 Royal British Legion

Industries has been supporting ex- Armed Forces personnel by train- ing them in employability skills to ensure they have the best opportu- nities to enter the civilian work- force.

Demand for RBLI’s skill and ex-

pertise is undiminished among this generation’s Service leavers, as is the need for its high dependency nursing home care, supported ac- commodation, and welfare advice and guidance. According to the RBLI, the or-

ganisation not only provides em- ployment and training to armed forces, it supports an increasing number of disabled, disadvantaged and vulnerable people in finding and retaining work.
