Cutting traffic in

your area SPEED Watch volunteers are needed in Larkfield and West Malling. Speedwatch is a scheme operated with Kent Police, where volunteers use roadside equipment to record traffic speeds. Volunteers are given a short police training session of a couple of hours, and normally work in the local parish. They set up the automatic speed recognition equipment and record manually the colour and registration numbers of the vehicles to enable warning letters to be sent to drivers from the police.

If they are caught again, the police will follow up with further letters or surveillance which can result in penalty points or prosecution. The information collected is also used to lobby Kent County Council as highway authority to take action to slow vehicle speeds in particular roads. Ninety per cent of vehicles receiving a warning letter are not detected again so Speed Watch activity is effective in slowing vehicles down.

Volunteers are needed now particularly for Town Hill and Swan Street, West Malling and for Lunsford Lane, Larkfield. If you have concerns about speeds in your local roads, you can volunteer for the training and get help to set up a team in your local area.

Barn will be home for new store A NEW home and living store, which

aims to be a creative hub for the community, is being launched in West Malling.

Owners Tina Massey and Roni Lang are planning a grand opening with live music on Friday, June 17 at The Barn which is located behind the Farmhouse pub in the High Street. There will also be another daytime preview with acoustic music on Sunday, June 19.

Tina said: “We are an exciting interior concept store that incorporates all aspects of home and living, including bags and stylish accessories for men and women. Our tag line is: collected, created, curated. We will be stocking local artisans that fit the Massey and Lang aesthetic so artists and makers are free to contact us.

“Wednesday night is art night where we will holding drawing and fashion drawing classes and taxidermy classes by Tonya Grung, a renowned London taxidermy artist. There will be ladies nights, art gallery nights and charity events.”

Massey and Lang both come from creative backgrounds. Roni studied at St Martin’s College in London, specialising in fashion design and working for major brands before launching her own label Roni Lang.

Tina Massey started trading vintage wares at Brick Lane in London before moving her shop to Abbey Arcade, West Malling, selling painted furniture, home wares and chalk paint.

The pair said they identified a gap in the market for original one-off pieces, composing a whole look for the home, as well as accessories for home, men and women.
