A Day in the Life
WHAT IS A TYPICAL DAY AT THE
FARM DELI LIKE FOR YOU? l Busy I am pleased to say! I am always in early to set up – we bake Cornish pasties, quiches and Danish pastries on site daily and these have to be ready nice and early for customers who are taking food with them off to one of the other islands. We are famous for our great coffee – so the morning is a buzz with lots of people needing their caffeine fix and that runs into a busy lunch service – it’s non-stop!
DESCRIBE THE FAVOURITE PART
OF YOUR WORKING DAY. l We have a beautiful display of fresh fruit and veg outside the front door which I love creating. I make sure it is different every day and always fully stocked as it is the first thing people see as they are coming in – first impressions are so important.
WHICH KITCHEN GADGET COULD
YOU NOT BE WITHOUT AND WHY? l I would have to say the Robot Coupe – It chops, slices, dices, grates, mixes – all in a matter of seconds.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY IS YOUR
BEST-SELLING PRODUCT? l That changes at different times of the year but we sell a LOT of Cornish Pasties all year round. Also our locally produced ‘Scilly Sausages’ from our own farm are a top seller because they are so delicious!
24 The Delicatessen Magazine
THIS MONTH WE SPEAK TO BEN ROBBINS PROPRIETOR OF THE FARM DELI TO FIND OUT WHAT LIFE IS LIKE RUNNING A DELICATESSEN IN ST MARYS ON THE BEAUTIFUL ISLES OF SCILLY.
OUTSIDE OF RUNNING THE FARM DELI HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND
YOUR FREE TIME? l There isn’t really much free time!! When the islands are at full capacity with visitors in peak summer I am either at work or asleep – but when I do have a day off I love gardening or taking a boat off to one of the smaller islands for the day to relax. l
