There are static and in-motion models and various options for both. Static models can only be used while the vehicle is stationary. In most cases, static sat-domes will also work perfectly well on a boat which is securely moored.


Both static and in-motion models are available with auto-skew, (rotary adjustment) of the LNB. This is a particularly good feature if you’re travelling away from the centre of a satellite’s footprint. By ensuring that the LNB is aligned as accurately as possible with the satellite, auto-skew can enable you to watch programmes which, with any other sat-dome, would simply not be available without removing the dome’s cover and making manual adjustments. Auto-skew is also a great benefit in bad weather.

If you don’t have much room on the roof of your vehicle or boat, or you want a system that has a lower profile than a sat-dome, this could be what you need: the Compact satellite dish from RoadPro.


Fully automatic, the dish unit itself weighs only a few


kilos and needs an operating diameter of approximately 52cms. This makes the Compact system ideal for smaller motorhomes, trucks and in any situation where there’s not a lot of space available.


A single cable (two on twin-LNB models) connects the motor unit to its controller which is, in turn, connected to a satellite receiver or a TV with a built-in satellite receiver. Switch on the receiver and, as long as everything is connected correctly, the dish will spin round and locate the satellite in seconds. In less than a minute, the system will lock on and send the signal to your TV.


The dish on our Compact system is the same dish that you’ll find inside our sat-dome. This means that its performance is identical too. The controller enables the dish to search for 5 satellites: you can see the reception areas on the map and the blue ring shows the area in which you can receive BBC, ITV and all the channels that you would receive at home in the UK.


Within the area outlined by the red ring, you’ll be able to access news channels such as Sky News and CNN as well as hundreds of others - mostly in foreign languages (an opportunity to brush up on your linguistic skills?)

It’s worth noting that even an 85cm dish won’t receive BBC & ITV in most areas further south than the northernmost parts of France’s Mediterranean coast.
