When you connect a solar panel to a 12V battery, you will almost certainly need a regulator. This will control the energy coming from the panel and get it to the battery in the most efficient way. There are several different types of regulator and, as with most things, you get what you pay for. We have a variety of regulators including basic ones and sophisticated MPPT models which will charge your battery significantly faster, especially in less than ideal conditions. Some regulators will charge the vehicle’s starter battery as well as the leisure batteries.
Most of our regulators come from Votronic, the leading German manufacturer and we have low-cost models from China too. They all do pretty much the same thing but some just do it better.
Some regulators can be connected to a display panel or “solar computer” which will enable you to see exactly how your solar installation is performing and how your battery is responding. These monitors show both current activity & voltage and also keep a record of total energy generated. So you can work out when your panels have generated enough power to have paid for themselves!
