WHAT’S ON AT GREATER BIRMINGHAM CHAMBERS OF COMMERCE

THEHUB C

onnie Talbot stole the nation’s heart as a six-year-old when she sang Over the Rainbow in Britain’s Got Talent. Although she didn’t win the competition, the Streetly, Birmingham, schoolgirl became an overnight sensation and sold 250,000 copies of her

debut album, which went gold in the UK. Connie, now 15, has become an international phenomenon, with appearances around the

globe, and she will be among the attractions at the Grerater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce dinner at the ICC on 28 April. She has offers galore - but her education is coming first. She lives in Streetly with her mother

Sharon, father Gavin, and her older siblings, brother Josh and sister Mollie. Connie began to sing "as soon as she could talk" and she spent many hours

with her grandmother Violet (who was very ill at the time) watching the film The Wizard of Ozrepeatedly and singing ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ together. Violet was the first person to recognise Connie as a talented singer, yet

sadly she died before Connie became known internationally. Connie sang Amazing Grace at her grandmother's funeral. Connie continued to build her international reputation and in 2010 she entertained

world leaders at a concert which opened the G20 world summit in Seoul. Connie's performance was seen by all the world's leaders with millions of people watching live on the Internet. She made several other appearances in Korea, including an interview on the prestigious KBS Classical Radio Channel. Early in 2011, Connie headed off to China to perform at the country's New Year

celebrations shown to an audience of more than 600 million on Chinese television. Next year, Connie went to Los Angeles and recorded her first single, Sail Away,

which quickly rose to the top position on CDBaby’s Pop Single Chart. She then performed three concerts in Hong Kong and returned to L.A. to begin

recording songs with the multi-platinum songwriter/producer and Grammy winner Toby Gad, who has penned hits for superstar Beyonce. She co-wrote two songs with Mr. Gad. And there were three sell-out shows in South Korea in 2014 from which

Connie donated the profits to help those people affected by the MV Sewol ferry disaster. Then she toured Taiwan, Hong Kong and Korea before performing live in Barcelona. The following year, she appeared at the Birmingham Pride Awards and

in December she sang for the Birmingham Children's Hospital at the Town Hall. Connie's YouTube videos have well over two hundred million

views and the videos on her official channel are currently viewed over 100,000 times per day. She has over one million subscribers to her YouTube channel. Connie, who has taught herself to play piano and guitar,

has written most of her songs herself. The compere and main speaker at the dinner will be broadcaster and former politician, Gyles Brandreth.

The event is nearing a 1,000-guest sell-out so check out ticket availability on the Chamber website at www.birmingham-chamber.com
