PARTNERS SOLIHULL CHAMBER PATRONS PRIVILEGE PARTNERS

A school experiment is rocket science

A

Solihull school is watching astronaut Tim Peake’s adventures in space more closely than most.

That’s because sharing the International

Space Station (ISS) with Major Tim are some seeds which are part of a project which students at Lyndon School, Daylesford Road, are taking part in. The seeds have been in space since

September, and will be returning in March – and Lyndon will be one of 10,000 schools to receive a packet of 100 of them, which the students will grow alongside seeds that haven’t been to space, and measure the differences over seven weeks. The seeds were sent to space on a Soyuz

space craft, as part of ‘Rocket Science’, an educational project launched by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Campaign for School Gardening and the UK Space Agency.

The out-of-this-world, nationwide science

experiment will enable Lyndon students to think more about how human life could exist on another planet, what astronauts need to survive long-term missions in space, and the difficulties surrounding growing fresh food in challenging climates. Natasha Peachey, science teacher at Lyndon,

said: “We are very excited to be taking part in Rocket Science. This experiment is a fantastic way of teaching our students to think more scientifically and share their findings with the whole school and wider community.” Rocket Science is just one educational

project from a programme developed by the UK Space Agency to celebrate Tim Peake’s mission to the ISS and inspire young people to look into careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects, including horticulture.
