You’re never too old to learn: Pam and Doug Smith

An innovative future A

retired Staffordshire-based couple are proof you are never too old to learn – with a trail-blazing Aesthetics Clinic.

Pam Smith, a former district nurse, MacMillan

nurse and university lecturer and her husband Doug a retired policeman, have combined their talents to launch the Chase CACI (Computer Aided Cosmetology Instrument) Clinic at Pillaton near Penkridge. The Clinic provides a range of treatments,

from facial workouts to face and body massages, hair removal, skin care and other expert services. The business was recently presented with the

Best Newcomer award by well-known beauty entrepreneur Deborah Mitchell, who owns the Heaven range of beauty products, and has also been featured in a premier trade magazine. But life has not always run so smoothly for

Doug, who was forced to retire as a police officer from the West Midlands force after breaking his back when he was thrown off a police horse more than 20 years ago. Doug attributes the success of the Chase CACI

Clinic to his wife Pam. “It is much more about Pam than me; she was a District Nurse, MacMillan Nurse and a University Lecturer. Pam’s

skills, caring nature and expertise have made this happen, I am just the guy behind the scenes.” Doug, 65, stresses the business is an ‘Aesthetics

Clinic providing non-invasive treatments’ rather than a traditional ‘Beauty Salon’.

‘We have a variety of equipment including devices which stimulate muscles’

Doug said: “Our consultations are free and we have 200 clients ranging from their late 20s to over 70. We have a variety of equipment including devices which stimulate muscles to work. One lady in the space of three weeks took one and a half inches off her upper arms while it can also be used on the stomach and 20 minutes is equivalent to 300 properly executed sit-ups.” “Our clinic is purely appointments only. People

value privacy and their trust in us is a major feature of what we do.” Doug has fought back from dark days of

depression following his horse accident with the help of work with the Riding for the Disabled Association.

Expert advice about exporting overseas

Cannock MP Amanda Milling has hosted an exporting event aimed at helping local businesses expand their markets overseas. The event was organised by the MP, UK Trade & Industry (UKTI) and

Chase Chamber of Commerce. It saw speakers from various organisations

talk about their experiences of exporting and the help that is available from UKTI. Speakers included Mark Bowen from ATP

Industries Group Ltd and Peter Langston of Zunsport, both locally based exporters. ATP is Europe’s largest independent re-

manufacturer of automatic transmissions and vehicle electronics and export their products all over the world. Exports make up two thirds of the company’s business and over the past year alone its international trade has increased by more than 57 per cent. Zunsport is a family run business and local manufacturer of specialist

stainless steel car grilles. With the help of UKTI they increased their exporting from just two per cent in 2013 to 17 per cent last year. Speaking after the event, Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Business,

Innovation and Skills said: “I would like to congratulate Amanda for co- hosting this event and working hard to help support and boost Cannock Chase businesses. The UK is one of the top places in the world to do business. As a Government we want to get 100,000 more businesses exporting by 2020 by making it even easier, faster and simpler for more UK businesses to export.” Ms Milling (pictured) said: “Exporting is an excellent way to grow a

business. The event was a great way of letting attendees know what opportunities exist and the help that is available. It was fantastic to hear from ATP and Zunsport who shared their experiences. I would encourage local businesses who are thinking about exporting to explore the opportunities that exist across the globe.”
