John Clancy succeeded Sir Albert Bore as Leader of Birmingham City Council in December, overseeing one of the biggest jobs in local government with a budget of around £3 billion a year. He has travelled from the relative obscurity of the back benches since he was councillor for the city's Hodge Hill ward from 2002 to 2006. He was elected to represent Quinton in May 2011 and also served as election agent for the Birmingham Edgbaston MP Gisela Stuart in 2001. Mr Clancy is from Stockport, Greater Manchester, but has lived in Birmingham since around 1990. He spent much of his career as a secondary school teacher plus five years as a visiting lecturer at the University of Birmingham business school.
