Hello and welcome to what will be the first of a series of articles about astronomy by the Vega Baja astronomy group.
In this series we will give you a glimpse of the astonishing things to be seen above our heads in the night sky. You can even wave to British astronaut Tim Peake as he goes over in the space station. Look to the south on the 30th of March at 10.18pm and you’ll see the station fly across the sky.
First to dispel a couple of myths. We don’t need to be scientists or geeks to enjoy the beauty up there, and we don’t need a big telescope to see something wonderful. A pair of binoculars will help though.
Go outside on a clear night, away from street lights and look up. Confusing
isn’t it. After a moment you’ll notice that many of the stars form groups, many of these are called constellations. One of the most famous and easily seen is called Orion. You can see it in the south around 9 o’clock. It has 2 bright stars at the top - Orion’s shoulders, 2 bright stars at the bottom - his knees, and 3 stars across the middle - his belt.
Orion’s right shoulder is the star Betelgeuse. It’s around 400 times bigger than the sun, and bright red, so we call this type of star a red giant. Next look below the belt, you can see a fuzzy patch. This is a nebula which is where new stars are being born. Amazing isn’t it.
Stargazing in March
You and your friends and family are invited to our observation evening on 3rd March from 7.30pm to 9pm. The venue will be El Raso Urbanisation (off the Lemon Tree road) CV895. Take the dual carriageway right to the end of the urbanisation. We can’t guarantee observing as it is weather dependent.
What will we be looking at? The moon will be a fantastic sight as it goes into its last quarter. We will also be looking at the Orion Constellation. Come along to our observing evening and look at the nebula through our telescopes.
For more information on this event please contact Pat Phillips 96 671 6211 or

If you can’t make it and are interested, or need help with a telescope, why not come along to one of our meetings at Casa Tom on Avenida Jaca, San Luis Torrevieja, second Wednesday of each month at 2.30pm. Email us at
