A View From

Welcome to my monthly column “A view from the top”. Hopefully you will find my rambling readable (maybe even enjoyable). You may agree or you may disagree with my views, I care not. These are my views long held and forged over a life time of work, travel and experience. Now that’s over let’s have a look at what is really winding me up.

Making a Spectacle of Myself.

Been having trouble over the last few months with my spectacles… although in truth it’s not the 'specs' that are at fault it’s my eyes. I am a voracious reader - with me it’s one book after another and sometimes, like at present, I have three books on the go at the same time, but obviously in rotation. Lately I have noticed that where I used to have to wear my 'specs' to watch TV… now with or without specs the picture is the same. On the reading front I seem to either be reading the same line over and over or I have taken to dropping off during my reading. On checking the date of the last visit to the 'eye shop'… shock horror it was all of two and a half years ago. Off I go to the Opticians or was it the Optometrist or maybe even the Ophthalmologist… well it was a large shop with eye testing gadgets in store. The shock in store for me was to be told “you have a cataract”. Now, I have broken several fingers… a wrist and the same leg twice… my nose and my jaw

(the jaw was after a minor scuffle with a Welsh front row), but all these things pale into insignificance compared to the news that you have a cataract. “It’s OK” says the eye doctor “we will keep an eye (no pun intended) on it”. In the meantime I needed to have my spectacle prescription changed. On the way home, trying to recover from the shock of the price of my new 'specs', I also started to think about my cataract. Now I understand that in the grand scale of things a cataract is not the worst of news… however I have never been told by a medical person that I have something wrong with me that was not self inflicted… all the broken bones were as a direct result of an aggressive way in the field of sporting pursuits. To be told that things are starting to wear out tends to bring one up with a start. A curious side effect of a new cataract is that the person with the cataract may start to see the occasional halo around people or objects… Thank God for a moment there I thought some of my mates had taken on a Holy mantle.

The European Union and Great Britain.

Already I am becoming bored with the proposed referendum on Britain’s place or otherwise within the European Union. If you have read my 'diatribing'

(my new

word) before, you will be aware that given the chance I would vote

firmly in the 'stay in' box as to Britain and Europe. The issue for me is that I am sick to death of spokespersons from both the in or out sides making statements about Britain and its role within the European Union. Another question that should be asked is about the role of Europe without Britain… not on a political scale but on a social cohesion scale. It will not have escaped your attention that all the pronouncements are coming from the same old suspects…
