Helen Kaney is senior dento-legal adviser and head of dental services, Scotland for Dental Protection and is based in the Edinburgh offi ce.


Helen is dually-qualifi ed as both a dentist and a solicitor, having qualifi ed in dentistry from Glasgow University and studied law at Strathclyde University. She spent several years in legal practice, where she specialised in defending clinical negligence claims against doctors and dentists, appearing at Fatal Accident Inquiries and acting for dentists in relation to NHS tribunals and the General Dental Council.


Helen is joined in Dental Protection’s Edinburgh offi ce by Hugh Harvie, senior cases consultant, and by Martin Foster and Terry Simpson, both dento-legal advisers.


Hugh is well known to many dentists in Scotland, having been head of dental services for MDDUS before joining Dental Protection in 2009.


Martin Foster qualifi ed in 1986 from Edinburgh Dental School and worked in general practice before moving into a career in the Community Dental Service. Martin was appointed assistant clinical director for NHS Lothian Children’s Dental Service in 2007. He maintains a weekly clinical commitment as a specialist in paediatric dentistry.


Terry Simpson was a general dental practitioner and a practice owner near his home town of Edinburgh. He worked for 16 years as clinical eff ectiveness adviser for NHS Lothian. Since 2004, Terry has led the Cochrane systematic review, Treatment of Periodontal Disease for Glycaemic Control in People with Diabetes.

T e team is assisted by associate dento-legal advisers Claire Walsh, Andrew Paterson and Bernice McLaughlin. Claire graduated from Glasgow and worked in a predominantly NHS general practice for 14 years, followed by a stint as clinical director for Integrated Dental Holdings’ Scottish practices.


Andrew Paterson is a specialist in restorative dentistry and Bernice McLaughlin has a background in general dental practice. In addition


to her role at Dental Protection, she is an outreach tutor in Aberdeen.


Two new associate dento-legal advisers have recently joined Dental Protection to further enhance the team in Scotland. Iain MacArthur, a Glasgow-based general dental practitioner, joins the team, together with Alan Whittet, also a GDP and formerly of PSD.
