PR OFE SSIONAL S LIS TINGS TARIQ ALI
BDS, MJDF RCS Eng, DipImpDent RCS Eng GDC: 74600
Tariq qualified from Glasgow University in 1998 and completed his VT year in Barrhead, gaining valuable experience working in NHS dentistry and then in Glasgow as an associate. He took over Bishopbriggs Dental Care 13 years ago and, originally a fully NHS practice, it has undergone many changes since. Five years ago the implant referral service, named the Centre for Implant Dentistry (CID), was established within the practice and Tariq now works exclusively within implant dentistry.
However, Tariq’s journey to this point didn’t happen overnight. After attending various courses in the UK and abroad, developing his restorative skills he happened to be exposed to the world of implants. He said: “Implants struck me as the ideal solution when a patient was faced with edentulism. I asked myself: ‘Why was I providing dentures when there was a better alternative?’ At the time, I was also looking to concentrate in one field of dentistry while working in practice and implants seemed to be the answer.”
Tariq embarked on a dedicated pathway of learning, attending numerous courses and working closely with a clinical mentor in practice. He said: “Tat way I started to cover the theory as well as the practicalities of implant therapy in a safe manner. As my experience grew I decided to undertake more formal training and undertook the FDGP Implant Diploma at the Royal College of Surgeons in London. Tis led to a true understanding of the field and to obtaining the skills that have allowed me to concentrate solely on implants and provide the high results that are demanded from patients.”
Tariq explained that, as well as the benefits implants provide for patients, he is committed to providing advice, support and training for his dentist colleagues as well. He said: “It really makes my day when another dentist phones me to thank me for support or for a course that we have run. Not only that, but the team I work with are all committed and it’s a pleasure to work alongside them on a daily basis, trying to solve our patient’s problems and finding solutions.”
And, even in the last five years since the CID has been in operation, Tariq has noticed significant changes in technology to help him and his team in their clinical lives. He said: “Te installation of CBCT in the practice has completely changed the way we work and allowed us to provide surgery in a safer manner. We also now have intra oral digital scanning which combines with CT images allowing a more accurate planning and treatment process.
“Added to this, the use of stents is seeing patients benefit from flapless surgery and more immediate solutions. We are now able to provide flapless surgery and an immediately restored implant all from scanning. Its accurate, quick and safe.”
Tariq explained that he has recently started providing same day, full arch solutions with the WeldOne concept from Dentsply Implants. He said: “Tis is an intraoral welding solution, developed in Italy with a sound research base. A customised titanium framework can be produced in a matter of minutes and incorporated within the prosthesis so that patients can leave with a fully functioning restoration on the same day as implant placement. It really is an exciting time to be involved in implant dentistry.”
