FEA TURE
restorative dentistry, her major interest was always endodontics, its practice, teaching and research. As a result, the subject of her PhD thesis was ‘Heat generation during thermally softened obturation techniques’. Her specialism in endo wasn’t
exactly planned from the start. She said: “I was the only female in the department at Dundee and none of the guys were interested in endo. So, when I said I would like to take over the lectures in endodontics, I was greeted with open arms.” She then became a consultant
and specialist in endodontics and was responsible for the undergraduate endodontic teaching programme at Dundee Dental School for many years. Elizabeth is a past president of
the British Endodontic Society, a past president of the Royal Odonto- Chirurgical Society of Scotland and served for some years on the
editorial board of the International Endodontic Journal. An external examiner for
specialist endodontic training in several dental schools, she published widely in refereed journals, co-authored chapters in several textbooks, lectured and ran hands-on endodontic courses throughout the UK and abroad, as well as being a guest speaker at many endodontic conferences. A significant part of Elizabeth’s
enthusiasm for endodontics was in running courses to help general practitioners with their endodontic patients. Tese saw her travel the world and make lifelong friendships with colleagues in the profession and in the trade. She said: “I got a great deal of
help from the dental trade over the years and I appreciated all those who trailed round after me doing courses for GDPs. Elizabeth also wrote and
updated her Manual for the Clinical Practice of Endodontics. She said: “I am pleased to say I think I could well have been responsible over the years for quite a few Dundee dental graduates actually enjoying the challenge of clinical endodontics – some even becoming specialists and professors in the subject.” On retiring from full-time work
at Dundee Dental School, she then held a part-time position teaching the endodontic module in the MSc programme for Primary Restorative Care at Edinburgh Postgraduate Dental Institute and also continued to run endodontic courses for vocational trainees and GPs. Elizabeth concluded: “I have
been very lucky to have the career I had in what could well have been the best of times. “I do hope I made a meaningful
and lasting contribution to the teaching and practice of endodontics in Scotland.”
