A Night Dined with Class by John Glover S6, Beaconhurst School
On Friday 25th September, 7.30pm in the Dining Hall – an event was happening – it was the Prefects’ Dinner which was full of cheers, laughter and speeches.
The Dining Hall was transformed from the humdrum of school life and the fairy lights provided by Mrs Casey were a great addition. They provided a sense of warmth which along with the tea lights created the right ambience for a relaxed occasion.
At the start of the evening we set up a skype chat with Jessica Young (Head Girl currently studying at a fellow Round Square school in Canada) so that she could give the Welcome Speech. Obligatory photographs were taken before the dinner got underway and it felt like a real sense of occasion.
At the start of the dinner, Deputy Head girl Jana Tobin gave Grace which was short and sweet but provided plenty of meaning. Gregor Malcolm, Head Boy was next and entertained the audience with a funny speech which got everyone in the mood for a fun evening.
Dinner itself was a splendid affair – a three course meal which included roast chicken served with garlic scented potato puree and asparagus and pea tart, followed by a cleansing lemon tart with raspberry sorbet. Coffee and mints rounded off a lovely meal.
The first toasts came as coffee and teas were served with the last toast to the staff and this was an interesting speech which made us think about the teachers’ contribution to us and our relationships with them.
The music started with The Proclaimers ‘ 500 miles’ which made everyone lively and Ms Bannerman ( Deputy Head of Academics) led the way on the dance floor. Soon we all joined in and the party got underway.
A good night was had by all! 69
