A busy term in P5 at Newton!

Primary 5 pupils at Newton Primary have had a very busy start to the year! They have been lucky enough to take part in a live archaeological dig in Dunblane and worked very hard producing and launching a Fairtrade recipe book!

Jacobite Archaeological Dig

On Wednesday 30th September, P5 made the short walk down to Millrow in Dunblane where we were met by an archaeologist from Archaeology Scotland. We were told that we were standing on the site where an ancient house would have been, that the Duke of Cumberland stayed whilst hunting the Jacobites in 1746. We took part in 3 exciting activities including metal detecting, excavation and sieving and storytelling to fi nd out more about the Jacobites. We each had a turn of using the metal detector and found lots of interesting things including old coins, old badges and nails from horse’s shoes! We also learned the correct excavation and sieving technique and found lots of ancient pottery in the soil. It was very exciting to fi nd objects under the ground from the 1700s! We also took part in some drama where we pretended to be Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite army. We marched around the park learning all about their travels, singing songs and acting out battles. Some of us even got the chance to dress up!

P5 Make the Bake This term P5 have been learning all about Fairtrade and how it helps farmers in developing countries. We found out that some farmers are not getting paid enough money for the crops that they grow and that they are being unfairly treated. After lots of research into Fairtrade, we decided that we wanted to do something to support the farmers. As a class we decided on producing a Fairtrade recipe book called P5 Make the Bake. We worked very hard researching and illustrating our Fairtrade recipes and sent the books to be printed at the Copy Centre.

On Wednesday 7th October we invited our relatives to the P5 Make the Bake Book Launch where we sold copies of our recipe book,

had a bake-sale, a raffl e and even our own Fairtrade Bake-Off competition! Our event was To advertise in thewire t. 07720 429 613 e. the.wire@btinternet.com

hugely successful and we raised a fantastic £550 for the Fairtrade Foundation. 68
