Explore the natural playground surrounding Vancouver
By Kate MacLennan
N
estled between the Coast Mountain Range and the Pacific Ocean, the Vancouver, Coast and Mountains region is a diverse blend of four unique geographical areas: Metro Vancouver (a
cosmopolitan playground), Sea-to-Sky Country (including world-renowned Whistler), the mighty Fraser Country (in- cluding the Fraser River and Canyon) and the unsung, serene Sunshine Coast. While Vancouver anchors this region, a natural playground begins within its borders, at the famed Stanley Park, and ex- tends limitlessly from there. Tink world-class, year-round recreational activities that include skiing and snowboarding, golfing, boating, cycling, hiking, climbing and kayaking. Vancouver, Coast and Mountains is perhaps least known
for one of its top highlights: extraordinary day trips. Cruise the two-hour, spectacular drive from Vancouver to Whistler, taking in soaring waterfalls, eagles and canyon vistas as you wind your way up Howe Sound, past the Stawamus Chief in Squamish, and into the mountains. Catch a short ferry ride to the Sunshine Coast, where stunning ocean views, peaceful lakes and a wealth of galleries and quaint shops, featuring lo- cal artists, greet you. Or, head east into the Fraser Valley for fantastic bird-watching, heritage sites and a taste of the grow- ing wine region. As a four-season destination for every age and interest, the beautiful landscapes, wildlife and nature abundant in the Van- couver, Coast and Mountains region leave no person who ex- periences them untouched.
