New York Hot Spots

Whitney Museum of American Art At once an architectural triumph and an American cultural institution, the newly open Whitney Museum of American Art has one of the most prestigious collections of 20th century American art in the world. The Whitney also holds an impres- sive collection of contemporary art, with a focus on living artists. See some of the most compelling modern art through the last century up until the current avant-garde and bound- ary-pushing influencers. On the banks of the Hudson River in New York’s Meatpacking District, you can even witness outdoor exhibitions with the backdrop of one of most capti- vating skylines.

Pier 55 Though it has yet to unfold, the plans for the Pier 55 park and performance space have been approved. The concept is truly fitting for New York: larger-than-life and rich in scandal. The four-mile park will stand on stilts over a pier on the Hudson River. It looks like an island out of Avatar – lush green space will be interspersed with three performance spaces, running free or low-cost shows. It’s an urban oasis-cum theatre spec- tacular that is being bankrolled chiefly by one of the city’s most prominent billionaires, Barry Diller, with the rest being made up by the city. Just because you can’t visit yet, doesn’t mean you can’t ask a local their opinion about it – and they will have one.

Lucky Cheng’s For one final, truly New York experience, visit Lucky Cheng’s, the drag cabaret restaurant. Opened in 1993, the New York institution was the first restaurant in the world to have drag queen servers, bartenders and performers. On Friday and Saturday nights, you can catch dinner and a show at the same cultural gem that draws celebrities – and even royals. The New York concept drew international recognition when Prince Albert of Monaco dined “à la drag” in 1994. The drag queens are perfectly outlandish, perfectly racy, and perfectly over-the-top. It’s New York entertainment at its finest.
