festival fever S

By Tania Moffat

ummer is festival season in Manitoba. Whether you’re just visiting or have lived your whole life on the Prairies, chances are

you haven’t experienced all of our fes- tivals. Every weekend offers something new, either in the city or in a neighbour- ing town. Why do we have so many festivals?

You never know what you’ll see at the Fringe.

Some people think we just love sum- mer, we do. Others think it’s so that we can find any excuse to get together with our friends, that’s true. Perhaps it’s that we like being outdoors, expanding our knowledge, experiencing the thrill of watching a bull rider or sling-shotting through the air on a midway. It’s for all of these reasons and more that we love our festivals. Tey are an ideal opportu- nity for us to showcase our Prairie pride, celebrate with friends and family and invite visitors to take part in Manitoba’s down-home hospitality. We have a festival for almost

every reason under the sun. Looking for a rodeo? Te Manitoba Stampede is

the hottest ticket in the prov- ince. Tis pro-rodeo event on

the Canadian Tour circuit stars some of the top names in bull riding, bronco- busting, tie-down roping, bareback rid- ing, steer wrestling, ladies barrel racing, team roping and chuck wagon racing. Whew! Te stampede’s agricultural fair is perfect for slowing down the pace. Local rodeos can be found throughout the province rustling up the same roping fun, just on a smaller scale. Want to catch a band?

Buddy Guy is performing at the Jazz festival this year.
