downsmail.co.uk Care homes’ glowing reports

AN EAST Peckham care home provider is the first in Kent to have its services rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission under its new inspection regime. The accolade was given to Hale

Place Care Homes for the quality of care at Hale Place Garden Lodge and Hale Place Farmhouse. Hale Place Garden Lodge pro-

vides residential care for three older people and Hale Place Farmhouse accommodates 10. Both cater for people with dementia. During an unannounced inspec- tion of the homes in Old Road in De-

cember, CQC found that staff had the skills, knowledge and experi- ence needed to support people. Inspectors found people’s care

was personalised to reflect their wishes and what was important to them. Care plans and risk assess- ments were reviewed and updated when needs changed. CQC found people were at the

heart of the service. Theywere able to take part in a wide range of activ- ities of their choosing. The arrange- ments for social activities were innovative, met residents’ social needs and enhanced their sense of

Steam train buried at brick site

REMNANTS of an old steam rail- way have been dug up by the de- velopers of the former brickworks site in Ryarsh village. The old factory was demolished

at the end of last year to makeway for 91 homes being built by Redrow, but now workers have dug into the concrete foundations and uncovered the remains of rail track and rolling stock. The railway was used to trans-

port materials between the quarry behind The Street, through a tun- nel, and on to the site in Roughetts

Road. The brickworks closed in the mid-1990s but the redundant steam loco and carriages were probably buried under concrete during the 1950s as the easiest method of dis- posal. The site, which has been used as

a construction depot for several years, has had a controversial his- tory since a planning application was submitted 10 years ago. It was acquired last year by Redrow which has permission for 91 houses and 8,000sqft of commercial floor- space.

wellbeing. Inspectors also observed therewas an open and positive cul- ture which focused on people. The manager operated an open door policy, welcoming and acting on suggestions for improvement. Adrian Hughes, deputy chief in- spector for adult social care in the south, said:“We found the manage- ment and staff committed to pro- viding outstanding care to the people living at the two homes. The team should be extremely proud of the work they do. “What really impressed me was the level of personalised support

that people received, from staffwho had the right skills and who treated people with kindness, compassion and dignity. People told us they liked the staff who supported them, and staff themselves declared it a great place to work. “People should always be cared

for by services that are safe, effec- tive, caring, responsive to their needs, and well led. I would en- courage other providers to read this report, and the otherswe have pub- lished on services we have rated outstanding, to see what they can learn.”
