Leanne hopes to raise awareness
A 24-YEAR old teacher from Snodland is hoping to raise aware- ness of disability during her bid to become Miss Kent. Leanne Burgess went to Maid-
stone Grammar School for Girls be- fore doing teacher training at Canterbury Christ Church Univer- sity. She now works with children and young people with learning difficulties, which has heightened her awareness of the prejudice some people face on a daily basis. She also has a twin brother who
has cerebral palsy. Leanne said: “There are a num-
ber of reasons that I chose to enter Miss Kent. These include boosting my self-confidence and being a positive role model to other young people. I wanted to show them that, aswell as taking pride in your appearance, you can be a success- ful young professional.” Leanne has launched her own campaign “Changing Impres- sions”, which she promotes on Facebook. She said: “Having grown up with
a severely disabled twin brother and worked with children and young people with learning diffi-

culties, I have found the prejudice that they face as a result of other people's misconceptions of their disability unacceptable. “I founded the campaign to pro-
mote awareness of the challenges that individuals can face, by asking people to share positive experi- ences and insights into these cir- cumstances. I hope to help to promote tolerance and respect within our society.” The final of Miss Kent at the Spa
Hotel, Royal Tunbridge Wells, on Sunday June 21, is a qualifying round for the Miss England Beauty Pageant.

Homes plan
A PLAN to demolish a four-bed- room house in Birling Road, Snod- land and replace it with five new homes was refused by Tonbridge and Malling Council. Clarendon Homes sought per- mission to develop the site at num- ber 206 with one detached house and four bungalows, but residents raised a number of concerns in- cluding that the layout and density were out of character with the area. Councillors rejected the proposal
on the grounds that the “overbear- ing form of development” would be harmful to neighbours.
Coage fires
FIREFIGHTERS were called to the Aylesford end of Hermitage Lane twice in one morning to tackle blazes at the same property. The first call was at 1.42am and
the fire in an empty bungalowwas out by 3.22am. There was a second alert at 6.48am when firefighters re- turned to tackle the fire which had re-ignited in the roof of the derelict house. The cottage, which is owned by
Royal British Legion, is empty pending redevelopment. The cause of the fire was being
investigated.
