Outgoing mayor boosts charities


TONBRIDGE and Malling’s out- going mayor, Cllr Sasha Luck, raised more than £10,600 for char- ity during her year of office. Oneof her last duties before hand-


ing over to her successor CllrOwen Baldock, was to present cheques to her chosen good causes. The money was split equally between Emilia’s Little Heart and the Royal Agricul- tural Benevolent Institution (RABI), who each thanked her for their do- nation of £5,338.29. The institution helps farmers, farm workers and their families in time of need. County chairman CharlesTas- sell said: “Last year we gave grants to about 1,400 individuals and fami- lies and helped those in need claim close to £380k in state benefits.Many of thosewe support are struggling to get by on very low incomes and this donation will be invaluable in help- ing these people make ends meet through their times of crisis.” Claire Webb, of Emilia’s Little

chosen to support dur- ing his year of office are the Bridge Trust, which helps homeless people in the Tonbridge area, and the Slideaway Charity in Wrotham, which offers care and support for children who have lost a sibling or near relative. Slideaway works closely with all schools in theWest Kent area. Born at Rodmersham Green, near Sittingbourne in 1956, Cllr Baldock


moved with his parents to Hadlow and later qualified as an electronics en- gineer with the Ministry of Defence in Chislehurst, eventually becoming a senior research engineer at Fort Halstead in Sevenoaks. He married Chris- tine in 1979 and the couplemoved to Tonbridge. Outside of his interest in local issues, he enjoys gardening, travel, photography, family history and maintaining his late father-in-law’s pre-war carwhich he enjoys driving to rallies. The deputy mayor for the forthcoming year is Cllr Mark Rhodes, who represents Hildenborough ward.
