downsmail.co.uk £8m pipeline finished at park

WORKtoweave two kilometres of water main between the lakes of Leybourne Lakes CountryPark has been completed ahead of the park’s summer season. The £8.1m pipeline is the first

phase of South East Water’s pro- gramme to improve the reliability of tap water supplies to people in the Maidstone area. Chris Love, delivery manager at

South East Water, said: “Installing the pipe through the country park was our first big test. “Aswell as laying thewater main

through sensitive habitatswe had to install it under a series of streams while also keeping thewater flowing to protect local wildlife.” The company’s contractor, Farrans Construction, installed dams and pipework for short periods which meant the pipeline could be laid with minimal impact. Phil Outram, the park’s head ranger, said:“We have been very im- pressed with how South EastWater and its contractor have worked with us to ensure that wildlife, habitats and visitors to the park are inconve-

nienced as little as possible. The proj- ect team will work closely with us throughout the summer to ensure the wildlife remains unaffected.” The company has now begun the

next phase of the project to lay an- other section of pipeline to the east of the River Medway near the vil- lages of Eccles andAylesford. It has also begun digging 12m

shafts either side of the M20 which will allow engineers to tunnel the pipe under the motorway without disrupting traffic. Mr Love said: “This pipe will re-

place an old water main buried be- neath Burham Marshes which has burst nine times in four years and because of its location, is extremely difficult to repair.” Once complete, the new pipe will

link into the company’s existing water main network ensuringwater can reach Maidstone, Larkfield, Ley- bourne, Snodland andAylesford far more easily. The scheme forms part of the com-

pany’s £424m investment pro- gramme taking place between 2015 and 2020.

Mother urges Mall to patrol parents’ parking spaces

AMAIDSTONEmumsays she avoids shopping at The Mall because of the difficulty finding a parking space. Ruth Young (29) has three children

under eight and now avoids the town because of the problem she faces finding a mother and toddler space at the centre’s multi-storey car park. The Mall has a designated area for

27 cars for parents with children on the fourth floor next to the shops, but Mrs Young says she is often forced to use floors further from the

shops. Mrs Young, fromWillington Street, says the problem is made worse by

“shoppers without children using the designated parking area”. Mrs Young believes The Mall’s

parking staff should patrol the zone. The Mall’s marketing manager

Suzie Brindle said: “As there is no na- tional framework for family parking, and operating a badge systemis not compulsory, we rely on customers to use these spaces appropriately. “We are constantly reviewing the management of our car parks and are open to introducing a badge sys- temif that is what customers want.” Send your views on parking at the

centre to amp.maidstone@the- mall.co.uk.
