An older guy, who might be a Punch and Judy exponent, or just somebody reminiscing abo- ut a time in his life when you co- uld see such things on a Scot- tish seafront? We don't know. What we do know is that this Punch and Judy stall is a magic box, full of cha- racters from the old guy's child- hood, and perhaps from his story between then and now. He's remembering a particu-

lar summer, 1960, when he was 15 years old. He's still a child, but is going through the kind of boy-to-man stuff we all recog- nise; he's already disillusioned with Elvis, for betraying his Po- or-White-Trash roots, his Girl- Back-Home is going off him for an older (16-year-old) guy, and his parents have dragged him off on holiday.

A message in a bottle is wa- shed up on the beach. Peo- ple have jobs, making things. There’s only one TV channel, to which only some people ha- ve access. A look at life in the 1960s and a chance to remi- nisce about all that has chan- ged over the decades

Returning to Rome from a war against the Goths, the general Titus Andronicus brings with him the queen Tamora and her three sons as prisoners of war. Titus’ sacrifice of Tamora’s eldest son to appease the ghosts of his dead sons, and his decision to refuse to accept the title of emperor, initiates a terrible cycle of mutilation, rape and murder. And all the while, at the centre of the nightmare, there moves the villa- inous, self-delighting Aaron. Grotesquely violent and daringly experi- mental, Titus was the smash hit of Shakespeare’s early career, and is written with a ghoulish energy he was never to repeat elsewhere.
