ll There's nothing better than being pleasantly surpri- sed by something you thou- ght you knew nearly everyth- ing about. Especially from a place you’ve lived for nearly fifteen years.

But this is what hap- pened when we were trai- ling through the Village in East Kilbride. We were loo- king for something that wo- uld stand out from the norm, different, unusual and maybe even quirky- and we certain- ly found what we were look- ing for.

In this beautiful area we are spoilt with the beauty of cobbled streets, historical buildings and swish busine- sses, alongside great hos- telries and restaurants. The Village gives East Kilbride a unique feature that alludes to the upscale West End of Glasgow while kee-

ping its feet firmly in the far- ming history the Village ca- me from.

This is a part of East Kil- bride that is relaxed and con- fident in what it has to offer, not just for the consumer but for anyone who has the bu- siness acumen to get in the- re and grab a piece of it, and thankfully there are many who do.

When walking along the picturesque Montgomery Street we came upon what looked like a 'close' with a car- pet- instead of the typical tiles or concrete - so we were intri- gued. We found signs leading to Magnificent hats and EK Alterations 2. Interest piqued, we entered into the stairwell. On the first floor we we- re welcomed by the owner of EK Alterations 2 - a fami- ly business. The staff we- re friendly and helpful, intro- ducing us to the unknown world of garment alterations. With 20 years experien- ce this is a professional es- tablishment whose staff ta- ke excellent care of their customers whether its sim- ply fitting a pair of trousers or ensuring every inch of your wedding dress is perfect for the big day. It is a much more personal shopping experien- ce, where they cater to yo- ur every need and they even offer express fitting and deli- very for anyone unable to get to their shop.

The next level up from the alterations is where we discovered a unique com- bination of studio and shop. White marbled wood floor greets you upon ascension to Magnificent Hats, which has an equally magnificent layout. Bay windows line the walls, creating a space wi- th light illuminating the wa-

res on display. Much more li- ke an art exhibit than a shop display, standing in the shop you get a tingle of exciteme- nt and a sense of being so- mewhere really special. Mother and daughter duo Jean and Pamela own the shop, and are both trai- ned milliners (designers and creators of hats), an ancient art that requires intricacy, ex- cellence and finesse. At Magnificent Hats you can have a bespoke hat or headpiece created to your specifications and have Pa- mela and Jean’s years of ex- pertise and fashion advice to create a unique addition to your wardrobe. Also on offer are a collection of hats from top designers such as Wal- ter Wright, Nigel Rayment, Valerie Corona and Niche. If you find a hat for that special occasion but it doesn't quite match your outfit then Pamela or Jean can offer the tailoring and personalization that you can’t get anywhere else. We live in an Internet age, where online shopping means you can get almost anything with the click of a mouse- the thing you can’t buy online is the personal to- uch to all of your garments that Magnificent Hats offer in their services.

Both boutiques are masked by the normality of the busy street view outside, until you enter. Go take tho- se steps into this Aladdin’s cave and experience the gems hidden in plain sight on Montgomery Street.
