AGAPE

New Charity Offers Health Services

zz Agape are a dynamic new registered charity, ope- ned on 5th Nov' 14, situa- ted at 28 Olympia Mall, Town Centre, East Kilbride (the old Littlewoods outlet).

My colleague Heather Malloch and I (Maureen Hem- ple) are two experienced Pu- blic Health Nurses who for se- veral years have worked within East Kilbride. We are both re- gistered with the NMC and are fully insured to practice in this voluntary project. We believe that it is impor-

Eureka Solutions is a small company from East Kilbride making a big name for itself in the Software Develop- ment industry. They are a company who provide business solutions as well as implemen- ting; supporting and developing software catered to your businesses particular requirements. I spoke to David Lindores, the general manager, about working for the front running business that has won the Sage Custom Solutions Part- ner of the Year for the last four years running and most recently has been has been named NetSuite’s Fastest Growing Partner in EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa).

So David, how did you get into this kind of job? zI went to Claremont here, lo- cally, many years ago and then went on to study at Glasgow University to do Computer Sci- ence. When I came out of Uni- versity I had a decision to ma- ke- do I want to work for a large company and be a small cog? Or work for a smaller busine- ss and try and grow. I started here as a junior programmer about eight and a half years ago and I’ve worked myself up to the head of the department. So when I started there was fo- ur members of staff and we are now up to 36 and a few more growing as well.

zz

What range of jobs is there at Eureka Solutions? zWe’ve got sales team and account managers, we’ve got the marketing team, and we’ve got telemarketers. We’ve then got the development side: software developers, consul- tants, for each of the ERP (en- terprise resource planning) products and support for each of them as well.

z z

Where do you advertise all your job vacancies? zMost of the time we tend to use S1 jobs. We take on a lot of graduates, our industry is very specialized and it is quite hard to find people who know abo- ut NetSuite and Sage. It’s a big

z z

marketplace with quite a small number of people working in it. So we tend to take on gradua- tes and then grow them within the business. Half of the people here started as graduates and have grown within the busine- ss. That seems to be the best route for us to take on new em- ployees.

What makes an application form or CV stand out to you? zIt depends on the role. If I we- re interviewing for a software position I would be looking for someone with knowledge on a vast array of technology. Previ- ous experience from other si- milar industries would be ideal. It’s also quite good to have so- meone with good, strong pro- blem solving skills but is also really inquisitive because a lot of what we do we don’t know what the answer is going to be yet so there’s got to be that kind of analytical mind to be able to sit down and try to work throu- gh the processes to get the customers the right experience.

z z

What makes Eureka So- lutions a great company to work for? zWorking from a smaller bu- siness you get to see the who- le software development cycle. So from the requirement cap- ture stage right through to de- velopment, testing and actual implementing it onsite then the

z z

support. If you work for a lar- ger company you only get to see that small bit that you ha- ve created. As a company we are putting more focus on Clo- ud development and mobile apps, things we think are really interesting.

What advice can you offer future applicants? zStick to what you know. Talk about the languages you know and the technology behind it. Maybe talk about some of the blogs that you read online, be- cause then we can begin to un- derstand what kind of develop- ment that person is interested in. Sticking to what you actually know is the simplest method.

z z

Are there any internships or work placement schemes available at Eureka Soluti- ons? zEvery summer we tend to ta- ke on a graduate. We work wi- th Glasgow University quite closely and every year we ha- ve had a summer graduate who has went on to have employ- ment with ourselves the year after. We also work with QA- they have an apprentice sche- me and we have just taken on a QA Apprentice so we take so- meone who is just out of high school and then we train them through the process and the do concurrent courses with QA as well which is a good way to get

z z

into the industry without having to go to university first.

More and more job requi- rements are looking for pro- grammers and coding- what languages and resources would you recommend to a beginner? zIt really depends on what it is you’re getting into. The thing about technology is that there is such a wide range and every industry is different. In terms of the business sphere, it tends to be a language called C# (pro- nounced C sharp), but if you are doing Cloud development which is far more common now, you’re looking at JavaScript or Python. Then of course you ha- ve mobile applications, which is a huge topic right now. You have to choose whether you want to learn Objective C for Apple or Java for Android, or if you want to do a hybrid version. There is so much out there and that’s what makes it hard to find a good resource from someo- ne who actually knows what they’re talking about. There are loads of online course and YouTube tutorials. If you try to pick something that you are in- terested in and then focus on that then you will be much mo- re likely to succeed at it.
