PROPERTY
come is going to be in relation to yo- ur projected outgoings.
The biggest payment that will have to be made is your rent; this will be on a monthly basis and will take up what seems an unfair amount of funds. For the majority of private properties you will also have to part with a safety de- posit, which will usually match the pri- ce of one months rent. Be careful not to damage any of the contents of your flat, or you can say goodbye to the deposit!
IS IT WORTH IT? The majority of young people will ei-
ther have to find a part time job or a flat mate to share with, which in itself pre- sents a whole new set of problems with divvying up chores and bills and putting up with some weird and not so wonder- ful habits. Is the freedom from paren- tal rule worth all the responsibility and stress of managing your own finances and household? Louise Ryan recalls her first year of living self-sufficiently when she was a student of 17: “I had my own schedule, working aro- und other people’s routine was tough.
Sharing a flat made me realise that I don’t want to live with other people, especially friends as it can ruin relationships. Now that I’m in my own place and paying for it myself, it’s fantastic. To be honest it hadn’t hit me that I’m actually running my own home without any help”.
FOR WHEN YOU DO NEED A HELPING HAND
If you do decide to make the big mo- ve then there is an abundance of infor- mation available. If you’re a student, so- me universities such as Strathclyde and Glasgow also have a database of priva- te properties that are ‘student-friendly’. If you’re not, online forums such as theStu-
dentRoom.org.uk or visiting the Citizens Advice Bureau down the Town Centre are extremely helpful resources. While this process does seem so- mewhat ageist, these are the hoops you have to jump through in order to rent a decent place to live in East Kil- bride. Now don’t let the landlord from hell stories dissuade you, most are ni- ce reasonable people who will be hap- py to give you advice if you just ask. Moving out is a part of life that everyo- ne has to go through
