Ultimate Canada and the National Coaching Certification Program STORY BY: CHRISTIANE MARCEAU

Youth are the future of Ultimate; coaches are at the heart of youth development from the community level to the top of the podium. To provide coaches with the best tools and trainings, Ultimate Canada has partnered with the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) as part of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP).

The National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), launched in 1974, gives coaches the confidence to succeed. NCCP workshops are designed for all types of coaches, and make it easy to get started and stay motivated on the path towards coaching skills development. The CAC offers multi-sport NCCP trainings, as well as sport-specific NCCP trainings, with 65 national sport organizations partnering to make our Canadian coaches the best they can be. After more than 5 years of work and research, Ultimate Canada is extremely proud to have two sport- specific NCCP trainings available to Ultimate coaches.

NCCP Community – Initiation

For those parents whose child is involved in Ultimate, or those volunteers who work with participants of all ages that are new to Ultimate, the NCCP Community Initiation workshop is a great place to start.

Designed for coaches 16 years or older who work with new/entry level players, this workshop will focus on how to instruct the basic throws and rules of Ultimate. The role of the coach, planning practices, ethical issues around coaching and the needs of the athletes, will also be covered in this 1-day workshop that takes place both in the classroom and on the field or gym.

NCCP Competition – Introduction For those former athletes looking to give back to the sport they love so much, the NCCP Competition- Introduction program will open the doors to the regional or provincial level teams, creating a long- term relationship with the athletes to improve performance. Designed for coaches 16 years or older who work with U18 competitive players or adult developmental team programs, this 2-days workshop will allow the participants to understand learning styles and appropriate feedback through hands on activities. They will learn how to identify and correct common Ultimate errors, and how to lead drills for Ultimate. Ultimate Canada is proud to have recently received final approval for the NCCP Competition – Introduction.

NCCP Competition-Development

Ultimate Canada has started the process of creating a third level of NCCP sport-specific training, the NCCP Competition-Development.
