2014 ULTIMATE CANADA AWARDS Female Athlete of the Year 2014

Darcy Drummond - 2014 Ultimate Canada Female Athlete of the Year STORY BY: KATHRYN POHRAN

Canada has a wealth of talented female Ultimate players, but it should come as no surprise for Drummond to be honoured with this year’s Ultimate Canada Female Athlete of the Year Award.

Drummond is an impact player with a sneaky left-handed game: the type of player that you hate to match up on as she leaves everything on the field. Inconveniently enough, matching up against someone like Drummond will surely serve to improve your game. It’s a relief when these types of opponents finally wear the same jersey as you, and I’ve been fortunate to experience that every fall since 2008, allowing me to get to know Drummond’s leadership style as a teammate and co-captain.

A player that entered the game post-university, Drummond succeeded in mastering game skills and strategies quickly, making her a force in the women’s division. Since, she has only added to a resume of successes in sport. After tearing her ACL in the summer of 2009, Drummond was relentless in rehab, returning to women’s Ultimate in 2011 as a fierce competitor. She

was a key player on the 2012 Canadian women’s team winning bronze in Japan, was shortlisted as an alternate for the 2013 World Games team, and named to the 2014 USAU second All-Club team. Drummond leads by example, working hard and in turn asking the same of her teammates. She is a standout player on both of her club squads, and dominates the stats sheet as well.

In addition to excelling in Ultimate as a player, Drummond is a major contributor to the development of Ultimate in the community, always seeking to raise the bar for level of play. She continues to tirelessly promote women’s Ultimate in South Eastern Ontario, wearing many hats and stepping up when called to the task. This year, she co-captained two club teams in overlapping seasons – a task not easy to do at any time, let alone in a world championship year! The responsibility that Drummond took on and fulfilled came with a lot of pressure, and converted into a season’s worth of improvements and a gold medal. Though the proof is obvious, with two strong Ontario programs, the reach of her involvement in women’s Ultimate goes far beyond this. Drummond has co-captained Capitals since 2013 and PPF since 2008. (PPF won CUC gold in 2014.)

Coming from an opposing club player’s perspective, I have a love-hate relationship with how her hometown club (PPF) has developed into a strong squad of gritty Ultimate players. So much of this growth has to do with her leadership and team development abilities, and how she draws similar- minded people to working with her.

A competitive, determined and heart-filled player, Drummond has definitely succeeded in leaving her mark on women’s Ultimate as an impact player, a leader, and a contributor.
