2014 ULTIMATE CANADA AWARDS
Ultimate Canada Hall of Fame: Class of 2014 STORY BY: SCOTT LEWIS
TEAM INDUCTEE 2014 CHAOS - Winnipeg, MB
Besides Spirit of the Game, another factor that differentiates Ultimate from the other major field sports is that it is played in a co-ed format up to the highest level of competition. Due to the nature of the rules and the existence of Spirit, women and men are equally as important to the success of their team.
This makes it very appropriate that after two open and two women’s teams, the fifth team inducted into the Ultimate Canada Hall of Fame is Winnipeg’s CHAOS.
Although many leagues and tournaments were played on a co-ed basis right from the beginnings of organized Ultimate in Canada, it was not until 1999 that CUPA (now Ultimate Canada) introduced a mixed division at the annual national championships. Until 1998, CHAOS had been an open division team, but prompted by the new opportunity, they made the switch to mixed and became the first national champions in that division in 1999.
And they didn’t stop there, competing in seven national championships over the next 11 years, winning more gold in 2003 and 2009 and picking up the silver in 2000 and 2001. They also formed the core of the Canadian team that won a silver medal in the mixed division at the world championships in 2004, and competed at the World Ultimate Club Championships in 2002 and 2010.
And they were busy outside the championships, making the long trek from Winnipeg to compete in many other tournaments in Canada and the United States. They have organized numerous clinics and tournaments in Winnipeg to help develop up and coming talents and promote the sport. When needed, they would also split up into men’s and women’s

teams, bolstered by non-touring players, providing vital opposition for the other Winnipeg touring teams to test themselves against.
Yes, CHAOS has had much success winning medals, but talk to other players and teams and you will find out they were known just as much for their Spirit. Other teams loved to play against them even if they lost. It is no accident that in 1999 they became the first teams to win the Championship/Spirit Award double at a Canadian national championship. I know the four teams that preceded them to this honour are delighted to have CHAOS join them in the Canadian Ultimate Hall of Fame.
