Third Annual Douglas Bowl
The Canadian university Ultimate scene is blossoming in the Eastern half of the nation. Countless university and college programs battle each other in the rain and wind all Fall, setting their sights on the CUUC crown. Rivalries and friendships alike are made as teams face each other three, four, maybe even five times in a given season. On the west coast, with only a handful of university teams established, two programs stand out from the rest: UBC and UVic. The Douglas Bowl was created in 2013 to showcase university Ultimate and forge rivalry and relations between two thriving college programs.
In 2013, the inaugural Douglas Bowl took place on the University of Victoria campus in front of 300+ interested spectators. Umbrella-clad fans showed up to the 2014 Douglas Bowl in wet and windy Vancouver to watch these two programs slug it out in the rain at UBC. In 2015, the game returned to UVic and so did the sun.

Naomi Redmond and Lexi Omand contributed on both sides of the disc to keep the game close through half. UBC proved too strong and too consistent in both directions. There is a reason USAU has them ranked in the top five heading into the spring series. There would be no repeat as coach Tassia Balding’s squad pulled out a 14-11 victory.

This season, the game took a turn for the professional. Rather than a few metal bleachers surrounding a lined

After a few tacos and a coffee from the food trucks outside the stadium, the men’s game had begun. The U23-laden rosters were running an offensive show in the first half. UBC’s balanced attack relies on quick disc movement and distribution primarily from the capable hands of Peter Yu. There was no shortage of huge bids and awe-striking skies as the game continued. UVic used their height and throws to open up the deep game on offense, with hucks usually
