2014 ULTIMATE CANADA AWARDS
characteristics that Lloyd demonstrated as a captain of the Junior squad during WUGC in 2008 and led to Junior National Coach and GOAT leader Kirk Nylen inviting him to join GOAT for the fall run. As we see 6 years later it was an inspired move.
It was towards the end of the season that we got to see a number of times where Lloyd’s hard work and skill were put to work to seemingly take over games. Certainly Lloyd often draws opponent’s top defenders and even when they know exactly what he is going to do they have trouble stopping him. As a double threat both cutting and handling defenders have to respect both moves and Lloyd takes full advantage when he feels that a player is hedging on one direction more than another with fantastic results. Certainly our team prides itself on having a balanced attack where any number of players can combine to result in success on the field. For most of the season this is the case for GOAT. This year we had a couple of examples where Lloyd’s play was the difference between success and failure. In both of our elimination games on Friday at USAU Nationals Lloyd had stretches where he scored in bunches including circus catches, deadly strikes and just plain winning the battles for discs. When he wasn’t doing the scoring himself he was creating space for his teammates or working the disc under. Mark Lloyd was certainly a difference maker for GOAT in 2014.
Lloyd had a strong year in 2013 and was recognized with the Male Athlete of the Year Award. Remarkably he followed that up with a season of equal success. His dedication to Ultimate for 2014 spanned 3+ teams, two leagues, several leadership roles and as a speaker at the Ultimate Canada Conference. Many players had very good games or fantastic contributions to teams but none can match the impact Lloyd has had in so many different areas of the season.
Thank you!
