Regional Update - Spring 2015

before heading outdoors for Youth Spring League. We have targeted grades 6-9 in order to promote growth, retention, and development within the program.

Like other prairie cities, Calgary still has a fledgling junior scene. To build and develop junior programs in the prairies, our communities have to work together. There is no stronger hook than taking a group of kids to another city to play a tournament. We’ve found that getting kids out to tournaments is what builds friendships, life skills, and a lifelong love for ultimate. Therefore, CJU is looking to spearhead the development of a Prairie Juniors circuit where each city hosts a junior clinic and tournament. That way, our entire region can grow together while forming friendships and healthy rivalries.

The strength of CJU lies in its volunteers. Adult players, parents, and teachers keep coming out of the woodwork with a strong desire to help the next generation of Calgary Ultimate. A huge shout out to Anthony Green, a Chestermere area teacher who leads a successful program of junior high kids every year. This is an exciting year for CJU, there is a lot of work ahead, but we have the right people in place, and we can’t wait for what is on the horizon.

More acronyms from Winnipeg: WYUL

Prairies By: Mike Chura

Winnipeg has always been innovative in terms of youth Ultimate. Winnipeg was one of the first provinces to boast high school and middle school league play. This translated into a strong touring presence on the junior club scene, still holding one of the highest averages in terms of placement in the junior divisions at CUC. Add in the fact that SJR hosts one of the longest running junior tournaments in North America and you may be wondering what the people at MODS will come up with next.

While comparing programs offered to kids in the Ultimate Canada LTAD model, it became very apparent that there was a hole in our programming for kids between ages 9-15. Most kids in this demographic are going to elementary/middle schools that don’t have Ultimate programs. Couple this realization with the long-time goal of creating a summer youth league and you have the basic recipe for the WYUL (Winnipeg Youth Ultimate League).

The WYUL is entering its inaugural season, offering Ultimate to kids aged 9-15. The players will be split into two divisions: 9-11 and 12-15 allowing for more skill-appropriate coaching. These divisions will run at separate times through the summer; the 9-11 year olds will train and compete in May and June while the second session (ages 12-15) will run in July and August.

Athletes can expect to receive excellent coaching, having a curriculum designed with LTAD in mind. The goal of the league is not only to expose kids to Ultimate, but also to bring the kids appropriate lessons that will lead to strong fundamental skills.

I’d like to talk about the broader reaching impact that one child can make on the sport and my hope for the ripple effect MODS’s new programming can make.
