Hypnotherapy and Chocolate...


Spring is nearly here, it seems like winter has hung around for a long time this year and people are optimistically talking about the promise of a heatwave over the Easter weekend. This may or may not materialise but the most important thing is the brighter mornings and longer evenings lengthening the days and holding the promise of summer days to come.


At this time of year, the shops are full of brightly coloured clothes and egg shaped gifts hinting at what is likely to be the most exciting springtime product of all for hundreds of people.


Easter eggs and chocolates of every type


imaginable are available for these few weeks leading up to Easter Sunday. I say few weeks however, shortly after Christmas had been packed away for another year, I spotted an advertisement on the television for a little chocolate egg which appears from January to April every year.


For most people chocolate presents absolutely no problem at all and they smile at the thought of chocolate addiction. There are some however, who cannot get through a single day without their daily dose. For those people who cannot go a minute, an hour or a day without a chocolate fix, it is no laughing matter. However trivial it may seem to some, an addiction to chocolate can be far more serious than we realise.


We know about the damage that sugar can do to our teeth and, every day, we read about the impact of excess sugars on our bodies.


From


diabetes, links to cancer, damage to the heart and toxic effects on the liver. Most of us can remember being given chocolate as a treat, to cheer us up, but now we read that sweets accelerate the ageing process. If we’d known all this back then, I wonder if we’d have been so keen.


The not so sweet truth that most of the clients who see me for weight loss are concerned about is weight gain and the impact that this has on their confidence and self-esteem. Many of them feel they are on a slippery slope leading to

feelings of worthlessness and guilt. This, in turn, affects their happiness both at home and at work and can result in depression. This whole circle of negativity often ends up in a need to consume vast quantities of chocolate to cheer themselves up. After all, wasn’t that what they learned as children, eat something sweet to make yourself feel better and everything will be all right?


For many, breaking this cycle can be as difficult as giving up hard drugs, cigarettes or alcohol – in many cases. It is the same set of triggers which lead people to look for release or comfort in these substances, they self-medicate to meet a basic need for comfort and in this case the comfort they find is in chocolate.


Hypnotherapy works on addiction to chocolate in the same way as it works for any other addiction. It helps the client identify the reasons why and when they over indulge, it helps them establish the triggers which compel them to reach for that chocolate bar and then works with them to unravel this habit and replace it with more positive alternatives.

targets compulsive behaviours to remove cravings, bypasses the conscious mind that deals with will power and works with the subconscious mind.


Some people find that their cravings subside immediately while others may need a course of sessions until they feel they are completely free of their urges. Willingness to succeed and a real desire to move on from old habits are key factors in moving on from chocolate addiction.
