Primary 2 – Newton Primary School Let the Force be with you!

On a cold, wintry afternoon Primary Two, as part of their focus on sciences, technologies, engineering and maths, braved the elements to launch their investigation in to the forces of Push and Pull. We played tug of war and explored the play equipment.

‘It was an energetic afternoon’ Ruaridh ‘It was a bit different to other learning’ Alby – ‘It was good fun to pull the rope… it could be really hard. We leant back and pulled the rope. Some people fell over!’ – Esmee ‘We went on a roundabout – we could both push and pull. We made it go fast’ - Anna

Our conclusion? The forces of Push and Pull were definitely worth investigating! We asked ourselves some Big Questions and proceeded to carry out practical experiments to find out if forces could make objects change shape and what happened if you changed the level of a force.

‘When I pulled the slinky it changed shape, it got longer’ – Saul ‘I learned that a squash ball changes shape when you hit it hard’ - Ruaridh We looked at bicycles and discovered that a bicycle is a series of simple machines which work together when you push the pedal. ‘Emily (P6M) brought her bike and showed us how the pedals, chain, wheels and gears worked’ – Eva

As our knowledge of forces grew, we accepted the challenge of designing our own play parks. We worked with a partner, shared our ideas and put pen to paper. Using our own design as a blue print we then used our problem solving skills to create 3D models of our designs.

‘It was a lot of fun, hard thinking and you needed to talk to your partner about your ideas’ – Islay ‘I was happy I did a good job of working in a team with Lennon and Ruaridh’ – Euan ‘I was most pleased with the seesaw, we matched our seesaw to our design well’ – Eve ‘Some of the materials we had, we tried, but they didn’t work and we had to think hard and change our plans’ – Chloe

We explained to each other how we had gone about our technology task and were very proud of our results. We shared our learning with the rest of the school at an assembly.

Did we enjoy learning about the forces of push and pull? ‘On a fist of 5, we are at a 110!’ – so said all of P2S and P2J!
