Dunblane Primary Primary 4 Context for learning – The Egyptians

All the children in Primary 4 have been using their research skills to learn about the Ancient Egyptians and spoke enthusiastically about their learning. At the end of the Spring term they will perform a musical concert closely linked to their work and they will share this learning with their parents and the rest of the school.

“We have been learning about Egyptians and I am going to tell you about where Egypt is and a bit about the river Nile. Egypt is in Africa. The pyramids are on the east side of the Nile because of the sunset. The sunset falls on the west side of the Nile and that is like the sun god Ra dying on one side of the Nile and being born on the other side of the Nile” Megan “ In our topic we were learning about Egyptian farming and the seasons. The Egyptian seasons are quite different from our seasons.” Emma “We have been learning about shadufs for our homework and we made models of them to show how they were used to get water from the river.” Murray “ A shaduf is a tool to get water from the Nile into farms. I made a wooden shaduf.” Andrew “ I learned about pyramids by making a net of a pyramid. Also, I read lots of books about them. The colour of the pyramids is normally the colour of wet sand. The most well known ones are the Three Pyramids of Giza.” Alice “A sarcophagus is for people who die in Egypt. The Pharaoh gets jewels and lots of fancy things in his sarcophagus. In class, we designed our own sarcophagus with lots of patterns.” Katie “I learned about pyramids by looking in a book and watching video clips. We made pyramids by using paper and then we coloured them in yellow.” Lucy “In our topic work, we have been learning how to mummify a human body the Egyptian way. They used metal nose picks to mush up the brain and they stuffed the body with sawdust.” Angus “We were also learning about Howard Carter who found the tomb of Tutankhamun. We wrote a newspaper report about him finding it and it really is interesting and amazing.” Robbie

Both classes were also very excited about their visit to the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh to take part in a Discovery Trail and learn even more about the Ancient Egyptians and see some real Egyptian artefacts.
