Metro Hop aboard the metro for an authentic Montreal expe- rience. The Société de transport de Montréal’s superb public transportation system, which includes bus and metro services, make it one of the easiest ways to explore the city. Their website provides visitors with all the information they will need for navigating the city and even includes a trip planner.
Visitors will be amazed by the Underground City in the downtown area as well as the beauty of the stations themselves. Each has been designed by different archi- tects and boasts various works of art. The metro offers visitors a unique perspective on the city and glimpse into Montreal life. Individual tickets, passes, evening passes or Opus cards (you pre-load them with tickets) can be purchased at the station. Trains and buses accept exact change for single use tickets. Notre-Dame Basilica This beautiful and historic basilica was the setting of Celine Dion’s 1994 wedding to René Angélil. A fairy tale building with dramatic Gothic Revival architecture and a grand and colourful interior, Notre-Dame is truly stunning.
The stained glass windows depict scenes from Montreal’s religious history instead of traditional religious imagery, and the 1891 Casavant Frères pipe organ with 7,000 indi- vidual pipes is a sight to behold.
Notre-Dame was the largest church in North America for over 50 years. Raised to the status of basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1982 and designated a National Historic Site in 1989, it is a beautiful landmark.
A fee of five dollars is charged to visitors to enter the building, unless they are attending mass. The basilica also offers, for a fee, a historical show detailing its history Tuesdays through Saturday in the evening.
