Winter is quiet time to visit Spain as you can see from the shopping area in Mijas Pueblo.

Food, shopping and the rest In spite of ancient, narrow streets,

Spain is immaculate. Te boulevards are well cared for and litter-free, with lots of lovely streetscaping. Tere is no fear of attending any public wash- room (asseos, we learned) because it will be pristinely clean. Te food is rather bland and the

many restaurants all seem to have similar menus, but the fish soup seemed equally good everywhere; if you like seafood, then this is the place to indulge your passion. Te shrimp, or prawns as they call them here, are not what we are used to, but good nevertheless. Te coast is renowned for its olive oil. Shopping is excellent with a wide

variety of goods and prices that are surprisingly reasonable for Europe. Te giant La Canada Shopping Mall in Marbella offers just about anything your heart can crave, but a few miles up the coast at Fuengirola, there is an- other mall just as good.

“Once you have been to Andalucia, And gone away, Your heart will stay in Andalucia Both night and day . . .”

It’s a lovely place and easily reach- able through Paris, only a 16-hour journey away if you can make the right connections. A bit of me is still there, dreaming in the gentle breezes as my eyes feast on fairy-tale scenes that many have seen only in old mas- ters.
