Ground was broken in June 1989, and the mall’s doors opened three years later on Aug. 11, 1992. With a 71 per cent leased rate, 330 brand new stores, and four na- tional department stores - over 10,000 employ- ees got ready to begin work the day it opened. Te rest is, as they say, history. More than a shopping mall, the complex is filled with movie theatres, attractions such as the Min- nesota Sea Life Aquarium, Nickelodeon Universe theme park, Legoland, a comedy club, numerous restaurants, food courts, and more. It has become a destination for tour- ists all over the world, generating US $2 billion each year in economic impact for the state. In fact, forty percent of the mall visitors are tourists. Why make a mall a vacation destination? Well first you really do have to see it to believe it. Tis is
clothing or shoes! Tis mall draws 40 million visitors every year. Tat’s crazy; the population of Canada is just over 35 million.

But if all this boggles the mind, the Mall of America has development rights for an ad- ditional 5.6 million square feet. Plans are to create a multi-level complex that will con- nect to the mall on all four levels with even more shopping, hotel and entertainment options. More business, family, premium and boutique hotel options, a new 20,000 square foot event space, museum quality ex-
hibit space, the state’s largest indoor water park, spas and a wellness centre, night life, more theatres and high end retail offerings are all in the plans along
a mall that could house 32 Boeing 747’s inside it. Shoppers will feel like they have died and gone to a shopper’s paradise with over 540 stores, and no, that’s right, no sales tax on

with an additional 8,000 parking spaces. Tis development anticipates it will draw an additional 20 million visitors an- nually, almost doubling the state’s economic impact to US $4.3 billion. What are you waiting for?
