Sphinxes sit on either side of the front pediment.
Frank Brangwyn’s mural appears to be a war scene, but is it? Look above the head of the man in the white robe – the Passion of the Christ and Madonna and Child are hidden in the painting as is a veiled account of the first degree initiation into Freemasonry.
Scandal! B
The eight pointed star, symbolic of the planet Venus sits directly below the statue of Mercury (Hermes/ Golden Boy).
y 1915, the cost of construction for the Manitoba Legislative Building was approaching $6 million and climbing. With Alberta and Saskatchewan’s
legislative building costs at just over $2 million each, blame was placed on architect Frank W. Simon. In real- ity, funds were being diverted from the project and placed into Conservative coffers. Sadly, this caused Simon to run out of money for his final designs and the province wouldn’t give him one cent extra to finish the project. Simon had to revise his plans. The dome was made of copper not stone; plaster or wood was used in place of marble for some areas; the rooftop conserva- tory and the two giant Egyptian obelisks that were to flank the front of the building were omitted, as were statues and carvings of Zeus and other deities.
