BANDIT SIGNS
Fines Can Reach $1,000 Per Day... Per Sign!
Attention builders and developers, var- ious cities and counties, as well as the state, have asked for GHBA's cooperation in controlling the use of directional signs, also known as "bandit signs."
The proliferation and illegal placement of these signs in public rights-of-way have once again become a problem. Various citizen groups are pressuring the gov- ernment to enforce the laws. The fines are potentially enormous with penalties up to $1,000 per day per sign in the City of Houston alone.
While GHBA understands that signs indicating the location of new homes and new communities are vital marketing tools, these signs should only be placed on private property — not in the public rights-of-way. In fact, the GHBA board of directors passed resolutions in 1998, 2001, 2004 and 2007 urging members to adhere to this standard and cooperate with local authorities so that builders may remain a part of this ongoing discussion as well as balance the needs of consumers and the home building industry.
