industry. Each moment of work, networking, communication, socializing is an investment, and results need to be quantifiable and return needs to be obvious. Efficiency is critical, hence the reliance on social media and other technologies.
Millennials are confident and adaptable. The business environment in Houston has attracted some independent and entrepreneurial young folks, and GHBA has done an amazing job of engaging those in the building business with the Young Professionals Committee.
The mission of YP is to create opportunities for education, networking, career growth, and philan- thropy for young GHBA members. I characterize Young Professionals Committee events as “high impact networking,” tailor-made for a group with tight time restraints. Their board meetings are not only about networking events, but also planning for charity and discussing long term value proposition. They are poised to bring in
revenue, influence, and energy into an already strong association.
The Young Professionals Committee did not exist when I started building homes. Before YP, getting younger members plugged into GHBA had been the responsibility of established builders and associate members. That exposure to mentors is still important today, but we are very lucky that we have a dedicated committee and staff that can show our young members how important they are to the longevity and relevance of the association.
As with every facet of GHBA activity, member and associate company executives hold the key to the success of this committee. Young members cannot engage unless prompted, so please send the contact information for your young associates and employees to Amy Carl, GHBA’s Government Affairs Coordinator, at
acarl@ghba.org.
The next YP new member orientation will follow the May 7 GHBA board meeting. This younger generation has a wealth of influence to add right now, and YP will continue to deliver for GHBA.
