Exciting future for Yr Hen Ysgol Dinas
2015 SEES the start of an
exciting development at Yr Hen Ysgol, the community centre in Dinas. The award of £84,000 from the Big Lottery for refurbishment of the Main Hall will lead to the largest improvement to the building since Yr Hen Ysgol became a charity in 2008. It marks a successful conclusion to the daunting bidding process which was negotiated by a dedicated group of volunteers from the Management Committee and Trustees.
The refurbishment will transform
the Main Hall into wonderfully inviting space, featuring an all purpose wood floor with underfloor heating, a high standard of insulation, and flexible LED lighting system. Building work is well underway and the Main Hall should be open for business again by the summer. Before that, a time capsule will be buried in the wall, including contents suggested by local schoolchildren. This
mirrors events of the original stone- laying ceremony for the school in 1869, when items including ‘recently minted coins of the realm’ were placed in a bottle within the commemorative stone. During the refurbishment, the large
committee room will still be available for bookings and is supplied with basic catering and washing up facilities including fridge, microwave, and small oven. Access to the small committee room, the recently refurbished toilets, and adjacent car park will also be maintained throughout the building works.
When the project is completed Yr
Hen Ysgol will offer the flexibility of three spaces – Main Hall, large meeting room, and small meeting room - plus modern kitchen facilities, to meet the requirements of residents and visitors. This opens up an exciting new future for an old building to better serve the whole community.

The Cabin, as it has officially been named, was opened by Simon Hart MP, a former parent and governor of the school. He said: “It is a real pleasure to be back at the school. My children had a wonderful education here and it is very good to see the school continuing to develop through exciting projects such as this one.” ‘The Cabin’ will be used as an outdoor learning and resource area for all pupils particularly the Foundation Phase. The aim is to promote and develop literacy and numeracy skills through using the outdoor learning environment as well as provide a wonderful role play area, multi sensory centre and exciting playground resource. ‘The Cabin’, designed and to
