Pembroke Dock’s ‘Millennium Falcon’ - if so the town’s Heritage Centre team is keen to hear from you!

The Centre, in the Royal

Dockyard Chapel, has linked up with a Swansea school where pupils are doing a special project on the iconic super spaceship which flew in the ‘Star Wars’ epic ‘The Empire Strikes Back’. Pupils at Ysgol Pen-y-Bryn Special School annually create a special edition magazine in aid of local charities. James Williams of Ysgol Pen- explained:

form group has already started on another magazine which will be themed around ‘Star Wars’ and we would love to hear from anyone who worked on the creation of the ‘Millennium Falcon’ at Pembroke Dock or remembers it there.” The original ‘Millennium

Falcon’ was built in great secrecy in a former Sunderland flying boat hangar at Pembroke Dock before

"Common sense has prevailed": MP Simon Hart and Dai Boswell inspect the memorial stone

A TWO-year planning battle

with the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park has been won – and the names of 79 servicemen who died in the Freshwater West maritime disaster will now be on permanent display.

Only three people survived the sinking of two Landing Craft Guns Ls 15 - 16 and the HMS Rosemary in April 1943. In 2000 a simple stone memorial was erected in the car park at Freshwater West to commemorate one of Wales’s worst maritime disasters. For the 70th anniversary of the

disaster in 2013, Dai Boswell, District Parade Marshall for Pembroke Dock, commissioned

two new plaques

bearing the names of all who died. But he was ordered to remove them because he did not have planning permission

and the National Park

drew up a list of stringent demands so he went to local MP Simon Hart for help. A two-year battle over planning followed.

“Considering that we are talking

about a site on the edge of a car park and between a public loo and large red emergency signs, I thought the

objective of protecting the landscape but this was clearly going well beyond that. What other disasters with the loss of 79 lives are there to commemorate in Pembrokeshire? We were talking about one extra boulder with two plaques on it, nothing more,” said Mr Hart, who then entered into a spirited exchange

Tegryn Jones on the matter. After

lengthy

of letters with NP boss a

exchange, the

landowner (the National Trust) applied for an additional boulder with the plaques and a change of use to a “memorial site” and permission has now been granted. “I am so pleased that common

sense has prevailed,” said Mr Hart. “Now we are working hard to find the right boulder and get the plaques up in time for the anniversary in April.”

Singing as good for you as yoga! IT’S OFFICIAL, singing in

groups is the new black. And it’s good for you too.

If you’ve hummed along to Gareth

Malone’s series The Choir, wiped away a tear at the Military Wives, or wondered how everyone at the Halifax Building Society can sing, you’ll have noticed that singing in groups is the new black. But did you know that it can be as good for you as yoga? Singing has long been shown to boost our immune system and reduce stress levels, and according to one report, researchers at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, found that ‘choristers’

synchronise that is as

beneficial to our health as yoga.” - And no need to touch your toes either! According to the Heart Research

UK website, the health benefits of singing are both physical and psychological.

Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education at the Institute of Education, University of London, has studied developmental and medical aspects of singing for 30 years. He says: “Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. And as with all exercise, it

helps create a positive mental attitude: “Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being.” What’s more, Professor Welch

confirmed that singing in a group is best: “Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour.” If you’d like to give it a go, but

don’t know where to start, why not dip a toe in the largest pop-up choir in Pembrokeshire, The Big Sing. The 150 strong sing-along is taking place during the Narberth A Cappella Voice Festival, on Saturday February 21 at 4pm at the Queens Hall, Narberth, hosted by Span Arts.
